Grand County Fishing Report Week of 7/12/21

Grand Lake - Fishing has remained fair to good for all species. Best time of the day to be on the water is first thing in the morning before it gets very busy with boat traffic. Rainbow trout and brown trout are being caught in 10-15’ of water, trolling Tasmanian Devils, deep diving crank baits or spoons and a snap weight have been producing. Focus on the areas with moving water or sharp transition to shallow water. Lake trout are active in water from 45-90’, Chartreuse colored spoons or radical glow grubs on a lead head have been working well tipped with a small piece of sucker. Fishing with Bernie Guide, Dan Shannon

Williams Fork - Ramp hours are 6AM to 8PM. Water capacity is at 92%, the lake is going down. Inflow is 68 cfs, out flow is 221. Surface temp is 66 early AM warming to 72+ on calm days. The warm water has driven the Lake Trout and Norhtern's to deeper water. The Lake Trout bite is fair to good early morning then drops off, but you can keep on biting fish with frequent moves. We are catching Lakers in 60 to 80 foot and seeing them on the bottom at 120 plus. Grubs or tubes tipped with sucker meat is producing bites. The Lake Trout bite picks up again late afternoon. Northerns are slow. I'm seeing close follows with no bites. The Northerns in Williams Fork have contracted a skin disease that I'm seeing on fish that follow my lures. The disease possibly can be spread to clean fish by landing nets or your hands. Bleach water can be used to disinfect landing nets and hand sanitizer for your hands if you boat an infected fish. Fishing with Bernie Guide, Randy H

Lake Granby - Water temp has increased to 70 degrees in the afternoon with the warm weather. Fishing has remained good, the time of day has been the difference in the fish activity with early and late both being most productive times. Rainbows and Brown Trout are finding the cooler water in the mouths of the creeks and deeper water 10-20’. Trolling lures such as deep diving crankbaits, or spoons and spinners on lead core that target these depths has been key. Lake trout fishing has been better than average for this time of year with good numbers of fish as well as opportunity for larger fish. 50-85 ft have been the most productive depths. Dark colored jigs tipped with sucker have remained the go to bait while staying mobile to find the active fish, with the location changing depending on the day. Grand Lake - It’s been a busy week on the water but the fishing has remained very good. Rainbows and brown trout are still active early and late in the day with the bite tapering off as the traffic on the lake increases during day. Grand County Fishing Report Week of 6/28/21

Grand Lake - The inlets have slowed down quite a bit in the past week and the surface temp has spiked by almost 8 degrees. Currently, the surface temp is sitting at about 56-57 degrees. As the 4th of July holiday approaches, the lake will be increasingly busier with boats, canoes, paddle boarders and all kinds of other rentals. The rainbow and brown bite has stayed pretty consistent even with the temperature changes in the past week. Right now it is very important to be fishing as early as possible in the morning to have the best chance at success. Leech Flutter Spoons from Clam Outdoors, Tasmanian Devils seem to be working best especially when casted towards the shore in the shaded areas. The Lake trout bite continued to fish very, very well the past week but it is obvious that there is a change happening in their behavior due to the water starting to warm. A lot of the fish are starting to scatter and head for a little deeper water. Most of the fish that we caught were in 50-80 feet of water near steep drop offs. Tube jigs and other minnow style soft plastics are working best when tipped with a little bit of sucker meat. As the fish start to move deeper (+70 feet), we are finding them holding 3-12 feet off the bottom. Best colors have been white and pearl. - Fishing with Bernie Guide, Jake Foos

Wiliams Fork - Ramp hours are 6AM to 8PM. Water capacity is at 91%, which is 6 feet low. Inflow has dropped to 208 cfs, out flow has increased to 95 cfs. Surface temp is 63 , climbing to mid 60's in the afternoon. There's still some debris floating on the lake, keep an eye out for it. Lake Trout are biting well in the AM until the sun gets high in the sky, then the bite drops off, but you can keep on biting fish with frequent moves. Fish of all age groups are being caught in 60 to 80 feet of water on grubs or small tubes tipped with sucker meat. Due to CPW's effort to eradicate Gill Lice in the lake, fishing for Rainbow Trout and Kokanee Salmon is slow. Northern Pike are slow but a few are being caught in the shallow bays mid to late morning. Fishing with Bernie Guide, Randy H

Lake Granby - Water temp has been consistent peaking at around 65 degrees in the afternoon. Fishing has been fair to good for all species. For rainbow trout and brown trout focus your fishing early or late in the day. Rainbows are biting good around the moving water , small spoons and spinners in pink or blue and silver are working well. Browns are being caught along the rock/mud transition areas in 10-15’ of water, deep diving crank baits and small white tubes worked along the bottom will produce bites. Seeing kokanee schools 20-30’ deep along night ridge and the entrance to Grand bay. Lake trout bite has been good, with the best bite happening in the morning while the water is calm. Finding most fish in the 50-85’ depth range. Dark natural colored plastics tipped with a small piece of sucker worked along the bottom has been most consistent. Stay on the move if you aren’t getting bites and find the groups of active fish. Fishing with Bernie Guide, Dan Shannon

Grand County Fishing Report Week of 6/14/21

Grand Lake - Fishing is about as good as I can ever remember right now so please get out and enjoy it! Lake traffic is very high so be cautious when traveling on the water in any type of watercraft.
Surface temps are in the high 40s right now and that is a good sign that the fishing is red hot. The inlets continue to spill cold, clean water into the lake and that is helping the bite tremendously.
Rainbows and Browns are very hungry and willing to eat a variety of baits in the morning. Small spoons, tazmainian devils and jerk baits continue to produce when casted in shallow water. The most important aspect of this bite is being on the water as early as possible. Once the sun hits the water, this bite seems to change so please remember to start early.
The lake trout bite is very good right now. We have been finding fish in depths from 40- 80 feet and they are hungry. Tube jigs, spoons and hair jigs seem to be working best. Adding a small piece of sucker meat and/or scent has been contributing to high catch rates. This bite has been good for us all the way into the early afternoon. — Fishing with Bernie Guide, Jake Foos

Williams Fork - Ramp hours are 6AM to 8PM. Water capacity is at 81%. The lake is 12 feet low. Surface is 56 warming to mid 60's in the afternoon. Now that the deep water Chironomid Midge hatch is over the Lake Trout bite has improved to fair to good. Laker's are being caught in 60 to 80 foot of water on plastics tipped with sucker meat. Bank fishing for Rainbows is slow as is trolling for Kokanee, both due to lack of population. Northern's can be found sunning in shallow water late morning, some fish are following but they're reluctant to bite. Slow moving baits my entice a strike.— Fishing with Bernie Guide, Randy H

Lake Granby - Fishing all over the lake is good to excellent right now. Water levels are rising steadily as well as temps, seeing surface temps into the 60’s already. Rainbow trout are biting well in the inlets and moving water areas of the lake, pink and silver spinners or spoons worked in erratic action have been working well. Brown trout are active along the rock/mud lines, work them with deep diving crankbaits bounced in the rocks. Lake trout bite has remained very good. Fish are being caught between 30-70’, small plastics in crayfish colors and your typical tubes will produce, add a small piece of sucker for extra enticement. Boat traffic has been heavy on the weekends use caution while headed out. —Fishing with Bernie Guide, Dan Shannon

Grand County Fishing Report Week of 6/7/2021

Grand Lake - Water temp is 45 to 51, both inlets are flowing hard. The rainbow and brown bite has been slower this week with most fish being caught in 5 to 10 feet of water early in the morning. Slow moving suspending or floating jerk baits may entice a strike. —Fishing with Bernie Guide, Randy H .

Lake Granby - Water temp is 50-54 degrees and will be increasing quickly with the anticipated temperatures this week. Rainbow trout fishing is excellent in the inlets and moving water, small piece of worm drifted in the current or pink and silver spinners have been working well. Brown trout are condition dependent but can still be a great bite on crankbaits if it gets windy or in those low light periods of the day along rocky shorelines. Lake trout have started to move deeper, the bite still remains very good. Tube jigs have been most consistent bite in 30-50’ of water, color of the tube they want seems to change by the day. Finding some groups of fish that don’t seem to want to bite, keep moving and you will find an active group. —Fishing with Bernie Guide, Dan Shannon

Grand County Fishing Report Week of 5/24/21

Spring fishing is here! Grand County Fishing Report Week of 5/24/21

Grand Lake - Water temp 45 F. Water is starting to flow in from both inlets, the water around the north inlet is very cloudy and stained from the burned area. Rainbows and browns are being caught on small jerkbaits and crankbaits in 5 to 15 feet of water. Lake trout are scattered throughout the water column from 10 to 60 feet of water. Small tubes tipped with sucker meat have been producing most of the lake trout.  Beware of floating debris coming into lake with spring runoff. — Fishing with Bernie Guide, Sam Hochevar

Williams Fork - The boat ramp is still closed due to low water level. Currently Williams Fork is at 69% capacity. Since I haven't been on the water yet I don't have anything to report on boat fishing conditions. The surface water is still cold which is bringing all age groups of Lake Trout within casting distance of shore fishermen. Shallow diving, suspending, or search baits can produce fish early AM or on windy overcast days. With the lake so low when the wind blows it like being in a Saraha Desert dust storm along the shore line... be prepared for that. Bank fishing for Rainbows is slow because the lake hasn't been stocked since 2019. Northern Pike have spawned and are a bit lethargic right now. — Fishing with Bernie Guide, Randy Hall

Lake Granby - Water temp is 48 degrees, level has been steadily rising over the past week, docks are in and hazard buoy’s have been placed around the lake. Lots of floating debris beware while traveling the lake. Fishing has been very good for rainbows and browns in the shallow rocky areas on small tubes and crankbaits. Lake trout fishing has been excellent, various small plastics fished on the bottom tipped with sucker has been very productive in depths from 20-50’. Look for larger lake trout along shorelines early in the day, crankbaits and large plastics are go to lures when looking for that big fish bite. —Fishing with Bernie Guide, Dan Shannon

This will be our last report until the ice comes off as Spring conditions are here and ice is changing fast. Use caution if headed out things can change in a hurry this time of year!!

Grand Lake - Rainbows and browns have been fishing well in 8 to 12 feet of water around inlets and flats. Kokanee are being caught in the same areas in slightly deeper water. Small spoons have been producing most of the fish. Lake trout are being caught in 30 to 80 feet of water on larger spoons and tube jigs. Look for the lake trout in the deep water to be suspended in the middle of the water column and the shallower fish to be on or close to the bottom. — Fishing with Bernie Guide, Sam Hochevar

Williams Fork - Ice is still 18 plus inches however we are starting to see small amounts of slush around the lake. Lake trout are being caught in 40 to 70 feet of water. Small plastics in the 1 to 2 inch profile tipped with a small amount of sucker meat have been producing most of the fish. —Fishing with Bernie Guide, Sam Hochevar

Lake Granby - Ice is 18”, Snow pack on top of ice is becoming thin with pockets of slush that increase farther east you go on the lake and late in the day. Lots of standing water on the ice in the afternoons. Fishing has been fair to good. Rainbows are active in the areas where water is coming into the lake, small tungsten head flies have been producing. To find the Brown Trout look to the transition areas between rocks and mud flats, 2-3” tubes worked along these areas has been working well. Lake trout are being found through various depths up to 80’ as well as suspended over the deep humps. For suspended fish use your electronics and play chase in the water column, spoons and small minnow imitations tipped with sucker have been getting bites. Small tubes, grubs and spoons fished on the bottom has also been a consistent pattern, If you’re finding fish but not getting bites keep moving till you find the fish that want to bite. Stay safe, Ice is on the decline. — Fishing with Bernie Guide, Dan Shannon

Grand County Fishing Report Week of 3/15/21

Grand Lake - There is a couple feet of fresh snow on the lake, so look out for new slush pockets. The bite has slowed down in the last couple of days due to the weather moving through the area. Browns and rainbows are still being caught in 5 to 10 feet of water especially around the inlets. Small plastics imitating nymphs like clams maki plastics on tungsten heads have been producing fish. Lake trout are still being found suspended over deep water, 80 plus feet. Small spoons and grubs tipped with sucker meat have been working on the suspended lakers. —. Fishing with Bernie Guide, Sam Hochevar

Williams Fork - The lake was starting to get some slushy soft spots in the afternoons and with the recent snow storm the slush will be getting worse. The snow on the shorelines will help extend our ice season for a little while as well. Snow drifts on the side roads will be an issue for a few days until the plows can get out to the lake. Fishing has been good if you can stay on top of fish. Lots of pressure on the lake the last few weeks has kept the lake trout scattered and moving day to day. Fish have been wanting to come off bottom and chase in the afternoon. Try and change your presentation as the weather changes and the day progress. What was working in the morning may not be what will trigger them on the afternoon.— Fishing with Bernie Guide, Rhett Feltman

Lake Granby — With all the new snow came some new slush! Slush was mostly in the Arapahoe Bay area, but anticipate seeing it spread more throughout the lake, be prepared in case you get stuck in the slush if headed out. Fishing has been fair this week with the constantly changing weather. Rainbow fishing has been best early in the morning, right as the sun comes up. Areas where water is coming in to the lake as well as along the dams have been producing well. Small silver and blue spoons as well as tungsten jigs tipped with wax worms have been getting bites. Lake trout are being caught from 50-80’ with some fish being caught suspended over the deep water structure. Spoons and small tubes are the most consistent producing baits right now. We are anticipating the bite picking up any time now with spring conditions rapidly approaching. As always check the ice as spring approaches conditions can change quickly. —Fishing with Bernie Guide, Dan Shannon
