Grand County fishing report for the week of 1-13-1-20

Here is your Grand County fishing report for the week of 1-5-20. The ice seems to be growing, the fish are biting and the 3 Lakes ice fishing contest is right around the corner.

Williams Fork- Lake trout have been in 40 to 70 feet of water. Bite has been tough of late making sucker meat a must most days. Fish are being caught on spoons and small plastics in the 1 to 4 inch range, larger baits can be a good way to weed out the super small fish. Rainbows have been in 3 to 7 feet of water, bite is best from first light until the sun hits the ice and then it dies off pretty quick. - Sam Hochevar, Guide-Fishing with Bernie

Grand Lake – Ice season is in full swing on Grand Lake.  The lake has 10”+ of ice on it, with open water in the typical areas in front of canal to Shadow Mtn as well as the north east corner by the inlet of the Adams tunnel.  Use caution if venturing near the open water.  The pond hockey rinks in front of the swim beach area are up so this area is bit congested if trying to fish here.  Conditions are great for walking and pulling a sled,  not many areas of slush.  Fishing has been average,  still finding rainbows and browns up shallow in the low light hours.  Small spoons such as the Pinhead Mino tipped with wax worm or small jig should produce.  Lake trout are being caught in 40-70’ of water.  Small tube jigs, grubs or minnow imitations tipped with small piece of sucker worked on the bottom will produce.  The key on the lake trout is being mobile and finding the areas they concentrate in that day.  – Dan Shannon, Guide – Fishing with berniekeefe@hotmail.com

Lake Granby-There is very little slush on Lake Granby, however there are areas of very slick ice on the lake. Be careful traveling over these areas. Rainbows are eating small jigs tipped with wax worms in 3-8' of water. That bite dies off when the sun hits the ice. Lake trout have been active most of the day. Tubes, twisters, spoons and bait have all been successful. Fishing in 40-80' of water has been very good.

Grand County fishing report for the week of 1-5-20

Here is your Grand County fishing report for the week of 1-5-20. We hope your holidays were great. Now it’s time to get out on the ice.  

Lake Granby-5”-8” of ice.  We’ve seen snowmobiles and atv’s out on the lake. Cracks have formed and are making icy spots as well as slush in some areas. Be careful, it’s your responsibility to be safe on the ice. Rainbows are eating small jigs tipped with wax worms early in the morning. Lake trout are eating tubes, trustees and spoons tipped with sucker meat. 

Grand lake is holding about 6-10 inches of ice depending where you are at. The recent snow storms have left the top a little bit messy but pulling a sled is still a very good option.

Rainbows and Brows are eager to eat a small tungsten jig with a wax or meal worm as well as a flashy spoon like the Panfish Leech Flutter Spoon by CLAM. These fish are being found anywhere in 4-15 feet of water.

The lake trout are spread out but if you find structure, you will find fish. 40-80 feet of water seems best right now. Small tube jigs with a very small piece of sucker has been best. Watch for the suspended fish if you are out over very deep water and present a spoon above these fish as well.

Spoons and small plastics have such as tubes and grubs with sucker meat have been the ticket for these fish. Rainbows have been shallow early in the morning over sand. Grand county fishing report for the week of 10-15-19

Here is your weekly Grand county fishing report. The mornings are getting cold, make sure to dress for them.

Lake Granby is fishing very well for lake trout. They are spawning in rocky areas in 30-50' of water. Small white grubs, spoons and hair jigs tipped with sucker meat are getting bit. Night time brown trout fishing is very good, floating minnow baits are working well. rainbows are around the shorelines hitting spoons and bait.

Williams Fork - Surface temp is 51 warming to 53 on a sunny day. Water capacity is holding at 84%. Ramp hours are 7AM to 7PM. The inlet is open for fishing. Jigging for Lake Trout is very good. Mixed age groups are hitting grubs, spoons or tube jigs tipped with sucker meat in 50 to 80 foot of water. Surface temps have dropped enough that shore fishermen casting from the rocks by the ramp are catching a few Lakers on spoons or spinners. Lake Trout are very close to spawning. Rainbow fishing has slowed, but we are seeing some big Rainbows break the surface. Casting spoons, spinners or minnow baits at the rises may produce some hits. Grand county fishing report for the week of 10-7-19

Here is your Grand County fishing report for the week of 10-7-19. The mornings are getting cold with snow on the forecast this week.

Williams Fork - Surface temp has cooled to 54 warming to 57 on a sunny day. Water capacity is 84%. Ramp hours are 7AM to 7PM. Fishing for all species is slow except for Lake Trout. Young Laker's are hitting grubs, tubes or metal spoons tipped with sucker meat in 70 to 90 foot. The bite is very light, but once your onto the bite you should easily limit. Keep your lines tight and watch for the hit on your rod tip. There are some large Rainbows cruising the shore line. Minnow type baits or spinners may produce some hits. Granby- Columbine bay is closed to fishing from Twin Creek all the way up to Shadow Mountain spillway. Rainbows are back in the shallows and eating just about anything that moves or doesn't. Bait and lures are both catching fish. Night fishing for browns remains excellent. Large minnow style baits or bulky streamers are catching fish. The key is a slow enough retrieve so that your bait makes a wake. Lake trout are in 45-60 feet of water. Bio Bait tubes and twisters tipped with sucker meat has been very good.

Grand County fishing report for the week of 10-1-19

Here is your Grand County fishing report for the week of 10-1-19. Brown trout and kokanee have moved to their spawning beds. Lake trout are next.

Williams Fork - Surface temp is 57 warming to 59. Water capacity is 85% and dropping. Ramp hours are 7AM to 7PM. The inlet is open to fishing. Young Lake Trout are grouped up and hitting small tubes and grubs tipped with sucker meat in 80 to 100 foot. With a little patience and concentrating on the lite bite jiggers should easily catch their limit. Shore fishermen are catching a few Rainbows on the bottom with Power Bait or worms. Trophy sized Rainbows are starting to move into shallow water along the shorelines, cast minnow shaped baits or spoons for them. Northern Pike are also moving into shallower water. Lake Granby- Rainbows are eating spoons and bait near the inlets. Brown trout fishing at night is excellent. Large minnow style bait have been working very well. Lake trout are still in deeper water, Bio Bait tubes, Plain Jane spoons tipped with sucker meat seem to be working very well.

Grand Lake- Rainbows and brown trout are hitting spoons near the shorelines. Lake trout are schooling up very well around structure.

Grand county fishing report for the week of 9-23-19

Here is your Grand County fishing report for the week of 9-16-19. The trees are turning, some of the fish are spawning and the lake trout are not far off.

Williams Fork: Surface temp is 60. Water capacity is 88% and dropping. Water clarity is very good. Ramp hours are 7AM to 7PM. I hear this year CPW is not closing the inlet to fishing. The small Lake Trout bite is excellent once located. Laker's under 22" are lite biting tubes or grubs tipped with sucker meat in 80 to 100 foot. Keep your lines tight to detect the lite bite and one should have no problem limiting. Rainbow fishing has slowed bottom fishing with bait and casting. A few fish are being caught lake wide. Grand Lake: Lake Trout are piling up on structure preparing for the spawn. Small white grubs will get bit. Rainbows are eating flies and spoons early and late in the day. Browns are eating minnow patterns along the rocks.

Lake Granby: Rainbows are getting aggressive again and can be caught with small spoons near inlets. There are a few Kokanee in Columbine Bay, casting is best until the sun hits the water then try trolling. The night bite for browns continues to be excellent, floating minnow baits worked well over the weekend. Lake trout are continuing to move towards their spawning areas but they are not in the areas yet. Tubes tipped with sucker meat are working very well.

Grand County fishing report for the week of 9-16-19

Here is your Grand County fishing report for the week of 9-16-19. The spawn is getting closer and the fish are starting to turn into their spawning colors.

Williams Fork - Surface temp is 60. Water capacity is 92% and dropping. Water clarity is 10 to 15'. Ramp hours are 7AM to 7PM. Lake Trout under 21" are hitting small grubs or tubes tipped with sucker meat in 80 to 100 foot. Bites are very light, keep your line tight to detect the hit. If you master the light bite... one should be able to easily limit. Bank fishing for Rainbows is slow but some are being caught lake wide on worms or Power Bait. Casting to rises early and late in the day may produce some hits. Northern Pike are starting to move shallower, but fishing for them is slow. Kokanee are slow due to low population. Grand Lake - Surface temp 60 degrees depending on the time of day.The rainbow and brown bite is getting better by the week.Casting and trolling spoons, jerkbaits and flies are taking fish right now very early and late in the day. Try to fish during the low light times of the day for the best success. Lake trout are on structure and eager to take a perfectly presented tube jig. Lake Granby, Rainbows and a few salmon are showing up in Columbine bay. Fish very early or very late in the day for the best bite. Browns are starting to spawn, fishing late at night with floating crank baits is very good. Lake trout are moving to their spawning areas, it will probably be a couple more weeks before that bite starts.

Grand County fishing report for the week of 9-9-19

Here is your Grand County fishing report for the week of 9-9-19 The cooler weather will bring cooler water. this will begin to make the fish a little more active. The fall spawners will soon be moving to their spawning areas, other fish will follow.Grand Lake - Fall is definitely in the air in Grand Lake right now. With the low temps at night and the afternoon rains we are getting, the water temperature continues to slowly drop. Currently, the lake is sitting right at about 60 degrees depending on the time of day. The rainbow and brown bite has picked up in the past week or so because of the water temp. Casting and trolling spoons, jerkbaits and flies are taking fish right now very early and late in the day. Try to fish during the low light times of the day for the best success. As fall progresses, the lake trout are starting to think about the upcoming spawn. Fish are on structure and eager to take a perfectly presented tube jig. Lake Granby - Brown trout are moving towards their spawning areas. Night fishing was good last week. Floating minnow baits and large bulky flies should get bit. Rainbows are getting active. Flies and lure along the shorelines are getting bit, early and late in the day is best. Lake trout are still in the deeper water and should be there for another 3 weeks. Tubes, heavy spoons and a variety of other baits should get bit. Trollers are catching fish with crank baits, squids and spoons. There are a few Kokanee in Columbine bay, fishing early mornings is best. The new boat ramp hours are 6-6.
Williams Fork - Warms days has raised the surface temp to 63 warming to 66 by the end of the day. Water capacity is 95% and dropping. Ramp hours are 7AM to 7PM. Water clarity is 10 foot plus. Young Lake Trout are hitting grubs or tubes tipped with sucker meat in 80 to 100 foot of water. Locate a group on your sonar and sit on them. Patients is key... and you should catch a limit. Large Lake Trout seem to be inactive. Rainbows have slowed but some are being caught on Power Bait or worms bottom fishing. Casting to rises at first light and sunset with small spinners or fly and bubble should produce a few hits. Kokanee trolling is very slow due to lack of population. Williams Fork - Surface temps are cooling to 60/61 early AM warming to 65 on a clear day. Water capacity is 98% and dropping. The new ramp hours are7AM to 7PM. Water clarity is about 10 foot. The Lake Trout bite can be very good for the patient angler. We are catching limits on small grubs or tubes tipped with sucker meat fished in 80 to 100 foot of water. Rainbow fishing has slowed. Bottom fishing with bait is producing a few fish lake wide. Casting fly & bubble or small spinners at rises around sunset is yielding a few fish. Northern Pike are slow. A (very)few Kokanee have been caught in Columbine bay, trolling lead core and bright spoons has been working.Lake trout are in 50-100 foot of water, jigs tipped with sucker meat and slab spoons have been working. Trollers are catching them on spoons and small crank baits.

Grand County fishing report for the week of 8-25-19

Here is your Grand County fishing report for the week of 8-25-19. The incredible fall fishing is just around the corner.

Granby- A few rainbows are being caught with bait on bottom. In the evening casting small spoons or flies and a bubble is also working. Lake trout are starting to group up for the spawn. This will mix all sizes of fish together, tube jigs, spoons and other assorted plastics tipped with sucker meat will work. Look for depths of 70'-100'.

Williams Fork - Surface temp is starting to drop. Average temp was 64 warming to 70 by the end of the day. Water capacity is 99%. Water clarity is 10 foot. Lake Trout has slowed down but they are still catch-able. Fish 80 to 100 foot of water with small grubs or tubes tipped with sucker meat. Rainbows have also slowed, but some are being caught lake wide bottom fishing with bait. Haven't seen many rises this week, but casting to the rises with small spinners or flies early and late should produce a few fish. Northern Pike are slow.
