Grand County Fishing Report Week of 5/31/21

Grand Lake - Water temp 44 - 47, both inlets are flowing. Rainbows and browns have been biting well at the surface early in the morning and throughout the day on overcast days. By mid morning on sunny days try fishing a little bit deeper in 10 to 15 feet of water. Lake trout are spread out in the water column, with most being caught in 30 - 50 feet of water on small plastics tipped with sucker meat. — Fishing with Bernie Guide, Sam Hochevar

Williams Fork - Ramp hours are 6AM to 8 PM. Williams Fork is at 73% water capacity. The Lake is 19 feet low. Surface temp is 49 early AM warming to 52 by afternoon. The Lake Trout bite is slow to fair. Juvenile laker's are biting well in 60' to 70' of water on small plastics tipped with sucker meat. Mature fish can be found in 40' to 70', but the bite is tough right now. I'm seeing trophy class laker's break the surface, casting for them is hit and miss. Northern Pike are sluggish in the cold water and recovering from the spring spawn. Kokanee fishing is slow due to lack of population. Rainbow fishing is also slow since the lake hasn't been stocked since 2019. — Fishing with Bernie Guide, Randy H

Lake Granby - Water temp has been 48-53 degrees. The bite has slowed a bit but is still good. Rainbows and browns are biting well in the inlets and rocky shorelines on spinners, and small natural colored crankbaits. Lake trout are being caught in 20-60ft of water, the transition areas between the rocks and mud have been good areas to concentrate on. Small tubes, grubs and crayfish imitations has been most consistent with color being different every day. Tip your jig with a small piece of sucker meat and keep it fresh for the best action. Grand County Fishing Report Week of 5/24/21

Spring fishing is here! Grand County Fishing Report Week of 5/24/21

Grand Lake - Water temp 45 F. Water is starting to flow in from both inlets, the water around the north inlet is very cloudy and stained from the burned area. Rainbows and browns are being caught on small jerkbaits and crankbaits in 5 to 15 feet of water. Lake trout are scattered throughout the water column from 10 to 60 feet of water. Small tubes tipped with sucker meat have been producing most of the lake trout.  Beware of floating debris coming into lake with spring runoff. — Fishing with Bernie Guide, Sam Hochevar

Williams Fork - The boat ramp is still closed due to low water level. Currently Williams Fork is at 69% capacity. Since I haven't been on the water yet I don't have anything to report on boat fishing conditions. The surface water is still cold which is bringing all age groups of Lake Trout within casting distance of shore fishermen. Shallow diving, suspending, or search baits can produce fish early AM or on windy overcast days. With the lake so low when the wind blows it like being in a Saraha Desert dust storm along the shore line... be prepared for that. Bank fishing for Rainbows is slow because the lake hasn't been stocked since 2019. Northern Pike have spawned and are a bit lethargic right now. — Fishing with Bernie Guide, Randy Hall

Lake Granby - Water temp is 48 degrees, level has been steadily rising over the past week, docks are in and hazard buoy’s have been placed around the lake. Lots of floating debris beware while traveling the lake. Fishing has been very good for rainbows and browns in the shallow rocky areas on small tubes and crankbaits. Lake trout fishing has been excellent, various small plastics fished on the bottom tipped with sucker has been very productive in depths from 20-50’. Look for larger lake trout along shorelines early in the day, crankbaits and large plastics are go to lures when looking for that big fish bite. —Fishing with Bernie Guide, Dan Shannon

Grand Lake - Rainbows and browns have been fishing well in 8 to 12 feet of water around inlets and flats. Kokanee are being caught in the same areas in slightly deeper water. Small spoons have been producing most of the fish. Lake trout are being caught in 30 to 80 feet of water on larger spoons and tube jigs. Look for the lake trout in the deep water to be suspended in the middle of the water column and the shallower fish to be on or close to the bottom. — Fishing with Bernie Guide, Sam Hochevar

Williams Fork - Ice is still 18 plus inches however we are starting to see small amounts of slush around the lake. Lake trout are being caught in 40 to 70 feet of water. To find the Brown Trout look to the transition areas between rocks and mud flats, 2-3” tubes worked along these areas has been working well. Grand County Fishing Report Week of 3/15/21

Grand Lake - There is a couple feet of fresh snow on the lake, so look out for new slush pockets. The bite has slowed down in the last couple of days due to the weather moving through the area. Browns and rainbows are still being caught in 5 to 10 feet of water especially around the inlets. Small plastics imitating nymphs like clams maki plastics on tungsten heads have been producing fish. Lake trout are still being found suspended over deep water, 80 plus feet. Small spoons and grubs tipped with sucker meat have been working on the suspended lakers. —. Fishing with Bernie Guide, Sam Hochevar

Williams Fork - The lake was starting to get some slushy soft spots in the afternoons and with the recent snow storm the slush will be getting worse. The snow on the shorelines will help extend our ice season for a little while as well. Snow drifts on the side roads will be an issue for a few days until the plows can get out to the lake. Fishing has been good if you can stay on top of fish. Lots of pressure on the lake the last few weeks has kept the lake trout scattered and moving day to day. Fish have been wanting to come off bottom and chase in the afternoon. Try and change your presentation as the weather changes and the day progress. What was working in the morning may not be what will trigger them on the afternoon.— Fishing with Bernie Guide, Rhett Feltman

Lake Granby — With all the new snow came some new slush! Slush was mostly in the Arapahoe Bay area, but anticipate seeing it spread more throughout the lake, be prepared in case you get stuck in the slush if headed out. Fishing has been fair this week with the constantly changing weather. Rainbow fishing has been best early in the morning, right as the sun comes up. Areas where water is coming in to the lake as well as along the dams have been producing well. Small silver and blue spoons as well as tungsten jigs tipped with wax worms have been getting bites. Lake trout are being caught from 50-80’ with some fish being caught suspended over the deep water structure. Spoons and small tubes are the most consistent producing baits right now. We are anticipating the bite picking up any time now with spring conditions rapidly approaching. As always check the ice as spring approaches conditions can change quickly. —Fishing with Bernie Guide, Dan Shannon

Grand County Fishing Report Week of 3/8/21

Grand Lake - Warm weather has helped the slush but there are still pockets. Fishing has been good with the stable weather. Rainbows and Browns are being caught around the inlets, small Pinhead Spoons or tungsten jigs have been getting bit. Lake trout are being found suspended over deeper water 80’+ use your electronics to find them, then small paddle tail minnows, spoons, and blade baits have been working to entice a bite. —Fishing with Bernie Guide, Dan Shannon

Williams Fork - The warm weather the last few days has made a few slushy areas around the lake. Some of the roads around the lake are getting muddy and sloppy in the afternoons as well. Fishing has stayed pretty consistent, and we are starting to get a decent late afternoon bite some days. Lake trout have been tough. Lots of fish coming in and just checking out lures and swimming away. If your on fish that dont want to engage with your baits than keep drilling until you find fish that want to play. Most importantly bring some sunscreen! Enjoy the nice weather and ice while it lasts. It might not be here much longer. — Fishing with Bernie Guide, Rhett Feltman

Lake Granby - Travel around the lake has been good, some slush but not the problem it has been past few years. Fishing has been consistent and good with the stable weather. Rainbows and Browns are being caught around the areas where the creeks come in, with low light being most active periods. Small minnow imitations and spoons have been working well. Lake trout are being found from 50-85’ as well as suspended over deeper water. For the suspended fish use your electronics to find them then fish a spoon being reeled away once the fish engages. For the fish along the bottom, the typical baits such as tubes, grubs, and spoons have been working well. You will find pockets of fish reluctant to bite, but just keep moving until you find the actively feeding fish. — Fishing with Bernie Guide, Dan Shannon

Grand County Fishing Report Week of 3/1/2021

Grand Lake - Grand Lake continues to grow ice with the current temperatures that we are having up there. Along with the cold temps comes snow and that means pockets of slush can be found throughout the lake. Please plan accordingly when thinking about what type of boots are needed to ensure a comfortable fishing experience.
Rainbows and browns are still being caught but have moved off slightly deeper in search of their next meals. Focus efforts in 10-20 feet of water and very early in the day for the fastest action. Small jigs tipped with wax worms have been best. We would suggest a small CLAM caviar jig or drop kick jig for best results.
Lake trout have been starting to show up suspending over deep water. This week we found fish over 160 foot depths. Pay special attention to your electronics when locating the suspenders and make sure that your presentations are above them at all times. These suspending fish are looking up for that they are preying on and having your baits anywhere from 2-20 feet above them will pay off. Spoons tipped with a small amount of meat or small soft plastics will definitely grab their attention. White, green and grey have been the beat colors when fishing soft plastics or swim baits. — Fishing with Bernie Guide, Jake Foos

Williams Fork - Ice conditions are holding strong, light snowpack on top of the ice with some slush showing up later in the day. Heavy winds have made a few snow drifts on the side roads going around the lake but they should clear up soon. Fishing has been very slow for lots of people I have spoken with, With the full moon fading away things should start to pick back up. March can be a really fun month to fish so don't give up on the short rods quite yet! Rainbow fishing has been picking up in the shallows as they are starting to switch gears and think about spawning. Lake trout can still be found in 40-60' the hard part has been getting bites. Slowly hitting bottom with a smaller 2-4" bait has been getting most of the bites. As the snow starts to melt off the ice throughout March we should start to see more Northern Pike move into the shallows to catch any sun they can on sandy and soft dark bottoms. Enjoy the ice while it is here because it is gonna be fading away before we know it! — Fishing with Bernie Guide, Rhett Feltman

Lake Granby - Ice conditions are good and the slush is minimal with good travel through most of the lake. Fishing conditions have continued to improve over the past week. Rainbows and browns are biting in shallow rocky areas early then moving deeper as the sun comes up. Small tungsten jigs and spoons will entice bites. Lake trout are still being caught through most depths, with most consistent success coming between 50-80ft. Starting to see some suspend over deeper water structure. Color depends on the day, but small tubes, grubs, and spoons tipped with sucker meat will produce bites. When in an area where fish are present but not biting, don’t be afraid to move to find those that will bite! — Fishing with Bernie Guide, Dan Shannon.

Grand County Fishing Report Week of 2/22/21

Grand Lake - With the snow has brought on some slush in areas. Fishing has been pretty typical for end of February, we are having to work for our bites but this should be improving as we get to March. Rainbow, brown trout and the occasional kokanee are being caught in 20’ and less of water, the inlet areas being most productive. Small pink or white ice flies and tungsten jigs tipped with an egg or wax worm has been a go to. Lake trout are starting to suspend over the deeper water, use electronics to find fish then fish to their depths with spoons and tubes.—-Fishing with Bernie Guide, Dan Shannon

Williams Fork - Lake conditions are still friendly for walking with a few inches of snow and no slush. Fishing has been best for the first few hours of the morning until the wind has been picking up. Later in the day we have had to play cat and mouse for several minutes to get fish to bite, big or small. Fish have still been active through the water column and are willing to chase but getting them to close the deal has been tricky. —- Fishing with Bernie Guide, Rhett Feltman

Lake Granby - This week has brought us snow and slush on the lake, while the slush is not to the same extent as the past few years it is spreading and being found throughout the lake. Use caution and be prepared while traveling the lake. Fishing picked up this week for all species. Rainbows are active shallow, less than 12’ and spoons were producing well. Lake trout are being caught in 40-80’ as well as finding a few suspended. While still catching most along the bottom they have been chasing spoons and tubes around the water column as well when they don’t bite right away. This time of year using electronics is key to finding fish as they are spread throughout the lake. —-Fishing with Bernie Guide, Dan Shannon

Grand County Fishing Report Week of 2/15/2021

Grand Lake - We have been getting snow lately and slush is starting to show up around the lake. Rainbows and browns have been biting well in 5 to 10 feet if water. small plastics or spoons tipped with wax worms have produced most of the fish. The lake trout bite has been slow but fish are being caught in 25 to 50 feet of water on 3 inch DNA Bio Tubes and glow grubs tipped with sucker. Stay mobile to find the active fish. —-Fishing with Bernie Guide, Sam Hochevar.

Williams Fork - With the snow over the last week there is a little bit of slush starting to show up but overall conditions remain friendly for walking. The lake trout are starting to show signs that they are moving into there late winter patterns. Fish are moving a little bit deeper and are starting to become more active throughout the water column. Active baits like flukes, paddle tails or rattle traps can be a great way to search the water column and grab a fishes attention. Small lake trout have been consistently biting on Clam XXL tungsten’s tipped with a Silkie and shrimp egg or a small piece of sucker meat. As the next few weeks progress keep in mind that fish should start to become more aggressive as ice out approaches.  — Fishing with Bernie Guide, Rhett Feltman

Lake Granby - Snow is accumulating on the lake and there are some small slush pockets forming throughout though travel remains good for now. Brown trout bite in the twilight hours early and late has been good. Find rocks in 15’ or less, a 1/8oz jig head tipped with a Gulp minnow worked in the rocks has been working well. Rainbows are being caught around the creeks on typical baits. Lake trout bite has been as inconsistent as the weather. Stay mobile to find fish willing to engage. Spoons, small tubes and tungsten ice flies have been enticing bites. Tipping with sucker meat has been optional and not always necessary. —Fishing with Bernie Guide, Dan Shannon.

Grand County Fishing Report Week of 2/8/2021

Grand Lake - Fishing has been slow to fair for all species. Rainbows and Browns are being caught on small spoons and plastics in less than 20’ of water. Lake Trout are the being caught on small grubs tipped with sucker between 40’ and 80’. Staying mobile and using your electronics is the key to finding active fish.

Williams Fork - Fishing has slowed since the start of the season, but the lake trout bite remains fair to good. Best bite for lake trout is early, may have to move a few times to find fish that will bite. Small spoons such as Leach Flutter Spoon tipped with sucker has been working well. Look for rainbows and browns around the inlet area, and in water less than 15’ with best bite being at sun up and sun down.

Lake Granby - With the recent snow and inconsistent weather pattern fishing has been up and down depending on the day. Travel on the lake is good, large pressure ridge from Elephant Island to Sunset Point is still an area to avoid and is very dangerous. Rainbow and Brown trout bite has been fair for first few hours after sun up then slows dramatically. Small tubes and ice flies tipped with a wax worm will produce bites. Staying mobile and looking for areas that have not been pressured as heavily will help find fish that will bite. Typical baits are working such as spoons, tubes, grubs. Grand County Fishing Report - Week of 2/1/2021

Grand Lake - Travel on Grand Lake is good, the limited snow has kept the slush to a minimum so far. Fishing on Grand Lake has been slow to average depending on the day. Rainbows are being caught on small tubes, spoons and jigs fished in water less than 12’. Brown trout bite has been slow, finding the occasional fish using more aggressive baits such as spoons and Clam Tikka Mino in various depths , sometimes as deep as 40’. Lake Trout fishing has been best in the mornings with tubes and grubs tipped with sucker., target depths from 30-65’ and stay mobile until you find fish willing to bite.

Williams Fork - Ice conditions are looking good with no slush and easy walking, so take advantage of it while it lasts. The bite this week has been steady until around noon. Most fish being caught have been on leech flutter spoons tipped with sucker meat early and transitioning over to small curly tails and tube jigs later in the day. Right when the wind has been picking up late afternoon there has been one last good flurry of bites and then it has been dying down drastically. Watch you electronics because if your not marking fish within 15 minutes you should be making a move until you find fish. Once you find a few fish there seems to be many more that will move through in the same small areas.  Rhett Feltman, Guide - Fishing with Bernie

Lake Granby - Still a large pressure ridge between Elephant Island and Sunset Point as well as many random ice heaves throughout the lake, use caution travelling around on the lake. Very busy weekend with the 3 Lakes Fishing Contest being held the past weekend. Heard varied reports from anglers fishing the contest of slow to good bite, depending on location on the lake. The key to finding fish that will bite and not just look was finding the fish that had not been pressured. Lake trout were being caught in a variety of depths between 40-80’ on various colored tubes and plastics. Rainbows and browns were active early and late in the day, with productive bites being reported on ice flies and micro tubes tipped with wax worm. Typically the lake does experience a tougher bite after the contest, but if you are persistent and look for those areas with less pressure fish can still be caught! - Dan Shannon, Guide - Fishing with Bernie
