Fishing Near Winter Park, Colorado: What to Know Before You Book
By the Fishing With Bernie Guide Team
If you're staying in Winter Park and looking for something to do beyond the slopes, the trails, or the village shops, here's one most visitors don't think of until someone mentions it: world-class guided fishing is just a short drive away.
Winter Park is known for skiing in winter and mountain biking in summer — but Grand County, the larger area Winter Park sits in, is also home to some of the best lake fishing in Colorado. Lake Granby, Grand Lake, and Williams Fork Reservoir are all within easy reach, and they're loaded with trophy lake trout, brown trout, rainbow trout and kokanee salmon.
Here's what to know if you're considering adding a guided fishing trip to your Winter Park stay.
How Far Is the Fishing From Winter Park?
Closer than most visitors expect.
Lake Granby is about 20 miles from Winter Park — roughly a 25 to 30 minute drive. It's a straightforward shot up US-40 through Fraser and Tabernash, with mountain views the whole way. If you're staying anywhere in the Winter Park or Fraser Valley area, this is an easy half-day add-on to your trip, not a major excursion.
Grand Lake is a bit farther — about 36 miles, around an hour's drive. Still very doable for a full-day trip, especially if you want to see more of Grand County while you're at it; the drive passes right along Lake Granby itself.
For most visitors looking for a quick, easy outing, Lake Granby is the better choice simply because of the shorter drive — more time fishing, less time in the car.
Why Add Fishing to a Winter Park Trip?
Winter Park does an excellent job keeping visitors busy with skiing, biking, hiking, and the resort village itself. But if you've done those before, or you're looking for a change of pace — a half-day on the water is a completely different kind of Colorado experience, and one a lot of visitors don't realize is so close.
It's also a great option for:
Mixed-interest groups — if part of your group wants another day on the mountain and part wants something more relaxed, splitting up for a morning works well
Families with kids — a guided boat trip is often easier on younger kids than a long hike, or wading a river with a fly rod and our guides are used to teaching first-timers
A change of scenery mid-trip — especially in summer, when Lake Granby and Grand Lake offer cool water and big alpine views that feel different from the resort village
Anyone who's never fished a high-altitude lake — Lake Granby sits at over 8,200 feet, and the fishing here is genuinely different from lower-elevation lakes most visitors are used to
What Kind of Fish Will You Catch?
Grand County's lakes hold a strong mix of species:
Lake trout (Mackinaw) — Lake Granby is known for trophy-sized lake trout, average size is 17 to 20 inches, approximately 2 pounds. We routinely catch fish over 30 inches and offer trips that focus on just catching a trophy fish!
Brown trout — found across all three lakes, often in shallower water
Kokanee salmon — a landlocked salmon species popular with anglers looking for something different
Rainbow trout — stocked regularly and present throughout the area
Your guide will tailor the day to what you're after — whether that's a shot at a trophy fish or simply filling your limit and having a relaxed day on the water.
What's Included, and What Should You Bring?
Fishing With Bernie provides everything you need to fish: rods, reels, tackle, bait, and a fully equipped boat with an experienced local guide. You don't need any of your own gear or prior experience.
What you should bring:
A valid Colorado fishing license (anyone 16 or older needs one — available online at cpwshop.com or at retailers in Winter Park, Granby, or along the way)
Sun protection — sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat. UV exposure is stronger at altitude, and it reflects off the water
Layers — mornings on the lake can be cold even in summer, and afternoons warm up fast. Dress in layers you can add or remove
A camera or phone — for the inevitable photo with your catch
Half-Day or Full-Day?
If you're working a fishing trip into a Winter Park stay that already includes other activities, a half-day trip is usually the right call — enough time to fish well without eating your whole day. If fishing is the main event, or you want a real shot at a trophy fish, a full-day trip gives your guide more time on the water to find where the fish are holding.
Both half-day and full-day guided trips are available, with options for solo anglers, couples, families, and small groups.
